Hi all and welcome to the August newsletter. Commodore's CommentHi all and welcome to the August newsletter. As I write this the AGM was just held last night and I may have been voted to carry on for another year as commodore. Not sure if this is good or bad just yet. There were only 17 out of over 200 members that turned up which was a bit average I thought. I would like to thank Rae Graham, Bill Hillis and Mike Reid who stood down from the executive committee. Thank you for all your hard work over the years. A special thanks to Henry Bennett who has given up the role of treasurer after many years holding the cheque book. He will still remain on the executive committee. Only other change is Ivan will take over from Henry as treasurer. Well done to Dave McFadzien and the marathon committee for one of the best marathons the club has had. I have a few trips and ideas in mind for general meetings coming up but if anyone has any other ideas please let me know. We would appreciate good support for these out-ings. That’s all for now, Tony McDowall GBC 795 Secretary's NotesHello Boaties. We held the Boat Club AGM on Thurs-day 16th at the Lodge and where the hell were you? Actually it was a pretty typical AGM with seventeen present, mostly Executive members and three general members. Off note, Tony McDowall is back for a second stint as Commodore, since he has done a sterling job this year and is comfortable with a second term. The treasury is in new hands, of Ivan Van de Water with Henry standing down after twenty diligent years. It’s a bit of a worry for the club as previ-ously we only had to worry about club funds being spent on bananas in Samoa. Now we have to worry about diamonds form Antwerp being funded......Anyway, thanks to those two blokes for past and future efforts. Three long standing members have stood aside from the Executive. Rae Graham, Bill Hillis and Mike Reid have had valuable input into the club's affairs over the years and we thank them for that. The Executive Committee now has eleven elected members over the statutory positions; all are good people with valuable skills to facilitate the running of what is a substantial and increasing asset the new list of members is printed at the rear of this Shoreline. And speaking of the Shoreline, we continue to print about two hundred paper copies and although the printing costs have reduced a bit, postage has just increased by 20cents a copy. The cost of the production and postage of the Shoreline still needs to be subsidised by the advertising. We really appreciate the support of the businesses that advertise with us and hope that you support them with your custom whenever possible. Executive is about to solicit the approval for this year’s adver-tising inclusion in the Shoreline and soon advertisers will be canvassed for their continued support. If you are a business that would like to be included you can contact me Pete Salmond on 027 2089031 and I will give you the good oil. Cost is $120 per third of a page with ten insertions per year. The Marathon was discussed at the AGM and the consensus is it was one of the best for a long time, due to the perfect lake conditions. The weather was excellent, the lake was near flat and the racing was great. Our new buoys worked perfectly, were easy to deploy and retrieve and were very vis-ible from a distance. One has a mark from a brush with Playco but nothing serious. And the prize giving and dinner at the Te Anau Club was very convivial. Congratulations to Ja-mie for winning his class over the series and especially to Trevor Heaps for winning the nominated speed section against a big field. So, what's next? We have booked the SBS St James theatre for another movie night on Thursday 6th September at 7.30pm to see “Mission Impossible” A good opportunity for the whole family to have a night out on the town. Nibbles, tea and coffee will be available prior to the movie. Phone me 0272089031 or Tony 0274893583 with numbers please. Bring the wife {your own} and the kids. Andrew & Angela Jones Children: Riley, Georgia & Thomas Boat: 759 Cabin Interests: Fishing & Diving We look forward to seeing you at some of the up and coming events Wriggilus EvadusAnother year goes by so it is action stations again. We do have a bit of an advantage as we have been over to the stands again for some re-strengthening of our main pole of the lift up stand. We done some maintenance while we were over so we are ahead of the game . There has been a report of bait in the river already as they have had no big floods so far but you would not count on it to stay that way. We have all the gear that we brought home with us repaired and supplies are being assembled. At the last Executive annual meeting I was handed a small gift due to the fact that I was retiring from being Treasurer of GBC for a while. Thank you for the nice thought. But I am a bit suspicious as it included a new fry pan and some named zip lock plastic bags the same size that we pack our 250 gram bags of Whitebait in. I do believe there maybe a message for me. We hope to be there before the season opens on the 1/09/18. Cheers, Henry Bennett 2018 MarathonFriday afternoon we headed for Te Anau to set up for the big day. A few guys set up the course using the new buoys and the rest headed to the Te Anau Club to set up the trophies and prizes. Later all gathered in the bar for a few quiet ales while some had a meal. The biggest topic that was discussed was how many of us had passed Gary Inder stopped on the side of the road a few km short of Te Anau. He had trailer brake problems and needed some tools to fix. Unfortunately most people just waved and carried on past, Including us! He didn't seem too upset about it though and obviously got it sorted later on. Race start was delayed for 30 minutes while the fog cleared to make it safe for the NZ1's chase helicopter, it stayed reasonably high and was unheard over the roar of NZ1's two massive V8 engines. The rest of the day was clear and calm, just perfect for flat out racing. We had 23 boats entered, 15 raced the speed event and 17 in the nominated event. NZ1 Fairview certainly was a huge draw card as cars were lined up at Blue Gum point for 200 meters along the shore watching the action during the speed race. They averaged 167.41kph around the course. Just a little over 102kph faster than me! Congratulations to Trevor Heaps who took out the nominated speed event placing first with only 2.78 points. I had an epic drag race with Mike Borthwick, the boats were side by side all the way down the track, unfortunately due to the bright sun distorting the light and vision of the finish line marshal the winner was judged to be Mike. You might see photos which sort of show me a bit behind but I'm pretty sure that was down to camera angle?.....Maybe? The prize giving was held at the Te Anau Club where 102 people sat down for a hearty feed. The formalities fin-ished up by 8.30pm, not bad for two prize giving's and a 2 course meal, It was well after midnight when they kicked out the riff raff and locked the doors! A big thanks to the GBC Marathon committee, Jamie, Hayden, Tony, Paul S and Martin your knowledge and guidance was awesome! Thanks also to Henry, Pete, Ivan, Trevor, Paul C, Gary, Catherine, Helen, Rebecca, Janine and Sue. Also to the pickup boats and divers. Thanks Heaps Team!! Also I would like to thank our sponsors for their generous donations. |
